What is dark matter?
What the evidence says about dark matter, and why nobody knows what it is.

Most of the matter in the universe seems to be invisible.
Galaxies spin, and clusters of galaxies move, as if they hold far more mass than we can see. Astronomers call the missing mass dark matter. It seems to outweigh ordinary matter more than five to one. It does not shine, absorb or reflect light in any way that has been detected.
The evidence comes from several directions at once.
In the 1930s and the 1970s, astronomers found clusters of galaxies and spinning galaxies moving too fast for their visible mass. Light from distant galaxies bends around clusters, as if pulled by extra mass. And the pattern in the oldest light in the universe fits a universe with plenty of dark matter.
In 2006, a collision between two clusters of galaxies gave a striking clue.
Most of the ordinary matter in a cluster is hot gas, which glows in X rays. As the clusters passed through each other, the gas slowed down and lagged behind. But the bending of light showed that most of the mass had carried on ahead, along with the galaxies.
What dark matter is made of, nobody knows.
A leading idea is a new kind of particle that barely interacts with ordinary matter. Candidates have names such as WIMPs and axions. Physicists hunt for them in particle colliders, with telescopes, and with detectors deep underground.
So far, the hunts have come up empty.
In December 2025, the LZ experiment, with tonnes of liquid xenon nearly a mile underground in South Dakota, reported the most sensitive search of its kind, and no dark matter. Each empty search rules out some kinds of particle, not dark matter itself. A single unusual event reported in 2026 was far too weak to count as a discovery.
A few scientists think the missing mass is not there at all.
In 1983, Mordehai Milgrom proposed that gravity behaves differently when it is very weak. His idea fits the way galaxies spin remarkably well. But it struggles with clusters of galaxies, the colliding clusters and the oldest light, so most astronomers still favour dark matter.
So when a search finds nothing, ask what it has ruled out, and what it has not.
The evidence that something unseen is pulling on galaxies is strong. What that something is remains one of the biggest open questions in physics. As of 2026, no dark matter particle has been detected.
